Vancouver
Vancouver
Vancouver is a coastal seaport located in the lower mainland region of the province of British Columbia. Consistently named as one of the top 5 Cities to live in for quality of life around the world, Vancouver has the highest population density of the entire province. Vancouver regularly hosts global events including the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, UN Habitat I, Expo 86, the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009; and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics which were held in Vancouver and Whistler, a resort community 125 km (78 mi) north of the city.[14] In 2014, following thirty years in California, the TED conference made Vancouver its indefinite home. Several matches of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cupwere played in Vancouver, including the final at BC Place.[15]
Vancouver is ethnically and culturally diverse and is a popular filming location. It is surrounded by mountains and water and boasts a thriving artistic environment with Theatre, music and art. The Vancouver Art Gallery presents works by regional artists and the Museum of Anthropology houses First Nations collections.
Vancouver is commonly split into three major areas: the Westside, the Eastside (or East Van) and city centre. This split is simply due to geography: everything west of Ontario St is the Westside, everything east is East Vancouver and everything north of False Creek is the city centre. Each of these areas have their own attractions and unique neighbourhoods. The areas in the city of Vancouver are frequently confused with the separate cities of North Vancouver and West Vancouver. North Vancouver and West Vancouver are north of Burrard Inlet and are not part of the city of Vancouver itself.
